Police, Edmonton airport warn drivers to respect snowy conditions

RCMP is reminding people to drive safely as light snow continues to fall this morning in Edmonton, making roads and sidewalks slippery. Police and the Edmonton International Airport have issued warnings to drivers to respect snowy conditions, as light snow continues to fall across the city, making roads and sidewalks slippery. The Leduc RCMP public information officer, Const. Cheri-Lee Smith, stated that some drivers are unprepared for the transition from dry pavement to winter driving conditions, which can include snow and slush covered highways, black ice and blizzards. The Innisfail detachment reported that Mounties were responding to up to 12 collisions on the QEII between Carstairs and Olds. Leduc police also advised people to prepare for winter driving by keeping headlights on all the time, maintaining a good mechanical condition, and switching into winter tires. Environment Canada's forecast for Edmonton is expected to see two to four centimetres of snow today, with temperatures expected to fall to minus 9 C with a windchill of minus 14.

Police are reminding people to drive safely as light snow continues to fall this morning in Edmonton, making roads and sidewalks slippery. “Some drivers are unprepared for the annual transition from the dry pavement of summer to winter driving conditions that can include snow and slush covered highways, black ice and blizzards,” said Const. Cheri-Lee Smith, Leduc RCMP public information officer.

“This first snowfall is a reminder and an opportunity to get prepared for winter driving, which means preparing our vehicles and adjusting our driving.” The Innisfail detachment said in an email sent mid-morning that Mounties were responding to as many as 12 collisions in “extremely poor” conditions on the QEII between Carstairs and Olds. RCMP also ask people to adjust to winter driving conditions through keeping headlights on all the time, making sure the vehicle is in a good mechanical condition, and switching into winter tires. Mounties recommend keeping an emergency kit with a blanket or sleeping bag, extra clothing, non-perishable food and first aid kit in the car, in addition to a fully charged phone. The Edmonton International Airport has also issued a weather alert on X (formerly Twitter), asking passengers to plan ahead and arrive early at the airport. “Roads are slippery out there this morning! Due to poor road conditions, we encourage travellers to check in from home and plan to arrive early at the airport,” reads the post. Environment Canada’s forecast for Edmonton calls for two to four centimetres of snow today, with a high of minus 3 C and a windchill of minus 13. Periods of light snow are expected to end this evening, as temperatures go down to minus 9 C with a windchill of minus 14.

Partly cloudy conditions are in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, it’s going to be mostly cloudy, and there’s a 40 per cent chance of light snow expected to fall Friday afternoon/evening. The snowfall amounts may vary significantly as some of the snow will melt on contact with the warm ground. Meanwhile, a snowfall warning has been issued for Calgary and the surrounding area, anticipating heavy snow between 10-15 cm to fall throughout the day and into the evening. Snow and light flurries are expected in Calgary until Tuesday, while the forecast in the city from Wednesday to Friday is sunny but with temperatures remaining below freezing.
