Calgary weather: Region under snowfall warning with 10 to 15 cm in forecast
Some 10-15 centimetres of precipitation are expected in Calgary through Monday, with snow and light flurries forecast until Tuesday. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Calgary, with 10-15 centimetres of snow expected to fall throughout the day and evening. The agency warned that the snowfall could affect visibility and road conditions and warned motorists to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. The city of Calgary has unveiled its snow-clearing plan for the coming winter season, aiming to clear Priority 1 routes within 18 hours after the snow falls, and Priority 2 routes within 36 hours. The snowfall amounts may vary significantly due to some of the snow melting on contact with warm ground. The City of Calgary's snow and ice control budget for 2024 will be about $54 million, but there is still $31 million left in the 2023 budget to be spent.

Roughly 10-15 centimetres of the white stuff is expected to fall throughout the day and into the evening.
The weather agency warned the snowfall could affect visibility and road conditions, saying you should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. The snowfall amounts may vary significantly as some of the snow will melt on contact with the warm ground. Snow and light flurries are expected in Calgary until Tuesday, while the forecast in the city from Wednesday to Friday is sunny but with temperatures remaining in the minuses.

Under the city’s snow-clearing program, crews aim to clear Priority 1 routes — freeways such as Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail — within 18 hours after the snow stops falling. Priority 2 routes, typically arterial roads and transit routes, are completed within 36 hours. Accessibility will be a focus for the city’s snow-clearing practices this year, said Chris Hewitt, the city’s manager of mobility maintenance, at a news conference Thursday. Crews will clear windrows from areas such as bus stops, crosswalks and traffic islands within two days of a snowfall to reduce the effect on people who use walkers or wheelchairs. The city’s snow and ice control budget for 2024 will be about $54 million. However, Hewitt noted there’s still $31 million left in the 2023 budget to be spent. The city also has about $14.8 million in its snow-clearing reserve, which has a cap of $15 million. “We’re in good shape there if we come into a severe winter,” Hewitt said.
